LG HB620T

The LG HB620T is a strange looking device, with a wide aspect screen and an antenna that sticks out of the back. The reason for these odd looks is simple - the HB620T includes a DVB-T digital TV receiver.

DVB-T is what most people would regard as a “standard” terrestrial digital TV signal, used in the UK for Freeview boxes and pretty much everywhere else in Europe for over-the-air digital TV. Until recently, most of the handful of mobile phones that could receive a digital TV signal used DVB-H, a variation of the domestic DVB-T signal, but designed for mobile devices. The Nokia N77, N92 and Samsung F510 are a few examples of handsets with DVB-H built in.

So why did LG choose DVB-T for the HB620T? Simply because DVB-H coverage is limited to a small number of places, and DVB-T is available pretty much everywhere. But DVB-T has two major drawbacks, one of which is that the transmitters work on different frequencies which means that a DVB-T receiver will have to rescan when it moves between transmitters, whereas DVB-H is designed to use the same frequency between all transmitters in a network. The video signal on DVB-H has also been adjusted to mean that it requires less power to decode it, so mobile DVB-T devices will tend to drain the battery quite quickly. (more…)

Palm Foleo

The Palm Foleo looks like a subnotebook - but it possibly the world’s largest mobile phone accessory instead.

Roughly analogous to the Nokia N800 and 770 in terms of concept, the Palm Foleo is a very compact Linux-based computer with Bluetooth and WiFi connections. Unlike the Nokia variants, the Palm Foleo integrates tightly with either a PalmOS-based Palm smartphone, or a Windows-based one.

The close integration makes the Palm Foleo an extension of the smartphone. There’s not need to worry about synchronisation and tricky software add-ons as the Foleo has been designed specifically to work in conjunction with a compatible smartphone. The Foleo isn’t just restricted to Palm handsets - Palm say that most Windows Mobile devices should be able to work with the Foleo with little or no adaptation. It should also be possible to synchronise the Foleo with Symbian devices, BlackBerry handhelds and even the Apple iPhone should the correct software become available (with a “modest software effort” according to Palm). Palm states that it is working with third-part developers to expand the appeal of the Foleo.

T-Mobile G1 “GooglePhone”

Probably the most anticipated handset since the iPhone 3G, the T-Mobile G1 is the first smartphone to use the Android platform announced last year by Google and a number of other partners. Android is based on Linux and is in part an open-source initiative that has hundreds (perhaps thousands) of developers working on different applications that an Android phone can use. But what Google have done with the T-Mobile G1 is to come up with a handset that tightly integrates into Google’s online services.. and perhaps pose a direct challenge to Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and the Apple iPhone experience.

T-Mobile G1: Hardware

Before we look at the software, a quick tour of the hardware. The T-Mobile G1 is made by HTC who have a long history of making Windows Mobile devices, often in partnership with T-Mobile and other carriers.

HTC Touch Viva

The HTC Touch Viva is a slight upgrade to the original HTC Touch, the main improvements being a software update, more memory and better battery life. This is a GSM-only handset with no 3G support, although it does come with WiFi connectivity. When the original Touch came out, the lack of 3G was annoying, but the Touch range now also has the HTC Touch 3G if you need UMTS support. The screen on the Touch Viva is a 2.8″ 240 x 320 pixel touch-sensitive panel. On the back is a fairly basic two megapixel camera, and the Touch Viva supports Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 and microSD expandable memory. Internal memory is now 128MB (up from 64MB in the original), and the operating system is Windows Mobile 6.1 with HTC’s enhanced TouchFLO interface running on top.

Inside is a 210 MHz TI OMAP 820 processor, the same as the original Touch. This isn’t particularly fast, but it should get most things done.

HTC say that the 1100 mAh battery can now give the Touch Viva up to 8 hours talktime and 11 days standby time. If this is the case, then that is a significant improvement over the original Touch. Overall, the Touch Viva is a little larger than its predecessor at 105 x 49 x 16mm, but slightly lighter at 110 grams.

i-mobile 101

The Hitz 101 has a basic design reminiscent of so many candybars that have come and gone, and reminds us of the older Nokia phones, especially the 2210. The phone’s covered with hard plastics all around and a two-tone colour scheme. The screen looks scratch-proof with a hard plastic glass. The screen is rather small, standing at 1.5 inches with 65K colours and 168×168 pixels. The screen is bright and does well under direct sunlight. The soft plasticky keypad is a little unintuitive, not to the point of frustration but it just isn’t fun or easy typing into the keypad. The keypad has Thai characters and would be useful for those of us who know the language. The D-pad is a nice touch, but feels awfully stiff. Do be prepared to flex your finger to work the keypad here. The charger port is located at the bottom of the phone, the port’s is a micro-USB port. Beside it is the 3.5 headphone port. Opening the rear of the phone was a slight challenge, the plastic is latched hard and like tight drawers will need a few tugs before it slides open. Crack open the rear of the phone and you’ll see the 680 mAh battery. Remove the battery and you’ll see the SIM slot. (more…)
