i-mate JAMA

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: I-mate

Founded in 2001, the Dubai-based company i-mate is known for its range of Pocket PCs and Smartphones based on Windows Mobile. Released in June 2007, the i-mate JAMA addresses the needs of those looking for a middle-priced handheld, and it’s the last Pocket PC from i-mate to feature the Windows Mobile 5 operating system. The company’s new Ultimate series all run on Windows Mobile 6, and I don’t expect them to release another Windows Mobile 5 device after this.  As the i-mate JAMA is some sort of a low-budget Pocket PC phone, it doesn’t include all the latest technologies and features. But the price of about $450 can make the i-mate JAMA an attractive offer for users in need of basic communication capabilities and productivity tools. Read the rest of this entry »

i-mate JAMin

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: I-mate

The i-mate JAM was one of the first very compact Windows Mobile Pocket PC phones and as a result, it was a hit. Though not offered by any carrier in the US, it was readily available unlocked from importers and online retailers. In just a year, the JAM has evolved into the JAMin, which keeps the small form factor and adds Windows Mobile 5, a higher resolution camera, WiFi, a quad band (rather than triband) GSM radio and more memory. That’s a healthy dose of upgrades for a device that maintains the same small size and sells for roughly the price of the original JAM when first introduced. The 200MHz Texas Instruments processor is the only downgrade from the 416MHz JAM. The JAMin is sold by importers and select online retailers but is not offered by any carrier in the US. Though pricier than carrier subsidized phones, the JAMin is unlocked which means you can use an GSM carrier’s SIM and need not sign a contract. It’s both a full blown PDA with touch screen and a quad band world phone with Bluetooth and WiFi.Like most Pocket PC phones, the JAMin is made by HTC, and its code name is the “Prophet”. The Prophet is sold by other manufacturers and overseas carriers as the XDA Neo, Qtek S200, Orange SPV600 and Dopod 818Pro. These devices’ hardware are identical with only minor software differences. The i-mate product line is readily available online and they offer good software support including ROM updates, making them a popular brand. Read the rest of this entry »

i-mate JAQ3

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: I-mate

The JAQ3 is a Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition device running AKU 3.2. It’s got a quad band GSM world phone inside that will work anywhere GSM service is available and it has EDGE (but no 3G) for data. US carriers don’t offer i-mate branded products, rather they’re sold unlocked for use with any GSM carrier via importers and online specialty retailers. The JAQ3 was just released so online pricing is a bit variable but we expect it to average $550 to $599 in the US after initial demand decreases.

Sporting every possible feature except a GPS and 3G, the JAQ3 looks like a good buy for the price: it has a landscape QVGA touch screen display (yummy!), front-facing QWERTY keyboard, WiFi 802.11b/g, a 2 megapixel camera and Bluetooth 1.2. The HTC TyTN (Cingular 8525) beats it on Bluetooth revision, processor speed and 3G, but that device costs a bit more without a contract. And if you’re a fan of the afore mentioned MS Smartphones or the Treo with the ever-handy front facing keyboard design (look ma, no moving parts), the JAQ3 has that special sauce.

i-mate Ultimate 8502 Review

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: I-mate

The Ultimate 8502 has a QWERTY keyboard, but the keys are quite small, so if you are planning to type a lot of text then this probably isn’t the smartphone for you.

I-mate has made the most of the space, though, with each key raised in its centre to make it easier to hit accurately. We managed a reasonable speed for creating SMS and email messages, but we would not suggest you try to use this smartphone for long and complex emails, or for document creation.

i-mate Ultimate 8502 – viewing the screen

As with other smartphones in the Ultimate range, the 8502 has a neat trick up its sleeve when it comes to viewing information ? you can use the provided cable to send the screen’s contents to a TV or projector.

The cable is a miniUSB at the device end, and it will convey sound as well as pictures, and you could use it to show presentations, pictures, or webpages. Read the rest of this entry »
