The LG HB620T is a strange looking device, with a wide aspect screen and an antenna that sticks out of the back. The reason for these odd looks is simple - the HB620T includes a DVB-T digital TV receiver.

DVB-T is what most people would regard as a “standard” terrestrial digital TV signal, used in the UK for Freeview boxes and pretty much everywhere else in Europe for over-the-air digital TV. Until recently, most of the handful of mobile phones that could receive a digital TV signal used DVB-H, a variation of the domestic DVB-T signal, but designed for mobile devices. The Nokia N77, N92 and Samsung F510 are a few examples of handsets with DVB-H built in.

So why did LG choose DVB-T for the HB620T? Simply because DVB-H coverage is limited to a small number of places, and DVB-T is available pretty much everywhere. But DVB-T has two major drawbacks, one of which is that the transmitters work on different frequencies which means that a DVB-T receiver will have to rescan when it moves between transmitters, whereas DVB-H is designed to use the same frequency between all transmitters in a network. The video signal on DVB-H has also been adjusted to mean that it requires less power to decode it, so mobile DVB-T devices will tend to drain the battery quite quickly.

To put it another way.. DVB-T will give you digital TV coverage pretty much anywhere, but you might want to keep your charger handy.

By their very nature, mobile phones with TV receivers in tend to look a little odd, beacause TV pictures are wide (landscape) and most phone screens are tall (portrait) ratio devices. Some manufacturers have come up with rotating screens and handsets that lie on their side, but LG have gone for the simple approach of mounting a 2″ 320 x 320 pixel panel rotated by 90 degrees. It’s a simple approach, and it means that the LG HB620T can “sit up” on its keypad. One obvious downside is that a 2″ display is quite small, for comparison the Nokia N77 has a 2.4″ display, and the N96 comes with a 2.8″ display.

When you get past the HB620T’s digital TV capabilities, you find that this is a pretty typical HSDPA clamshell phone. It weighs 110 grams, which is about average for a 3.5G phone and comes with a 2 megapixel camera, multimedia player, microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth, a web browser and email client. The HB620T’s 7.2 Mbps maximum download speed means that it can also access streaming multimedia.

The LG HB620T will be available on Vodafone’s SuperFlat tariff for just under €100 when taken with the €39.95 call plan. Vodafone expect to have the HB620T available in the next couple of weeks.

The Palm Foleo looks like a subnotebook - but it possibly the world’s largest mobile phone accessory instead.

Roughly analogous to the Nokia N800 and 770 in terms of concept, the Palm Foleo is a very compact Linux-based computer with Bluetooth and WiFi connections. Unlike the Nokia variants, the Palm Foleo integrates tightly with either a PalmOS-based Palm smartphone, or a Windows-based one.

The close integration makes the Palm Foleo an extension of the smartphone. There’s not need to worry about synchronisation and tricky software add-ons as the Foleo has been designed specifically to work in conjunction with a compatible smartphone. The Foleo isn’t just restricted to Palm handsets - Palm say that most Windows Mobile devices should be able to work with the Foleo with little or no adaptation. It should also be possible to synchronise the Foleo with Symbian devices, BlackBerry handhelds and even the Apple iPhone should the correct software become available (with a “modest software effort” according to Palm). Palm states that it is working with third-part developers to expand the appeal of the Foleo.

Using a Linux computer as a front-end for a Windows (or PalmOS) smartphone is certainly odd, but it seems promising. The Palm Foleo can Microsoft Office documents, PDF files and access the smartphone’s email and calendar appointments. In effect, everything you can do on your smartphone, you should be able to do on the Palm Foleo.

We said that the Palm Foleo was the biggest mobile accessory we can think of - it boasts a 10″ 1024×600 pixel display, a good sized QWERTY keyboard, WiFi and Bluetooth and it weighs around 1100 grams (2.5 pounds). There’s no internal hard drive - storage uses CF and SD memory cards. Battery life is quoted at 5 hours, and the Foleo features an “instant on/off” function too. We don’t know the exact size, but the Foleo will fit comfortably in an airline seat tray. The screen isn’t touch sensitive, but it’s controlled by a fairly typical “nipple” mouse instead.

The Palm Foleo also has a built-in Opera web browser and the handset’s WiFi functionality and flexible operating system should mean that the Foleo is also quite capable as an ultraportable computer in it’s own right. However, at around $500 after a $100 rebate, the Foleo isn’t cheap (we don’t know how much this might be in Europe if it ever crosses the pond - our guess is around £300/€500).

It’s better integrated with the phone than the Nokia N800, and it’s more device independent than T-Mobile Ameo, plus it’s an awful lot cheaper than the HTC Shift. It’s hard to say if there’s a much of a market for this type of device, but if there is then it could be a real winner for Palm.

The Palm Foleo will be available in the summer of 2007 in the United States. Availability elsewhere is not known at this point.

Probably the most anticipated handset since the iPhone 3G, the T-Mobile G1 is the first smartphone to use the Android platform announced last year by Google and a number of other partners. Android is based on Linux and is in part an open-source initiative that has hundreds (perhaps thousands) of developers working on different applications that an Android phone can use. But what Google have done with the T-Mobile G1 is to come up with a handset that tightly integrates into Google’s online services.. and perhaps pose a direct challenge to Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and the Apple iPhone experience.

T-Mobile G1: Hardware

Before we look at the software, a quick tour of the hardware. The T-Mobile G1 is made by HTC who have a long history of making Windows Mobile devices, often in partnership with T-Mobile and other carriers.

The G1 is very similar to a typical Windows smartphone in terms of specification - there’s a large 3.2″ 320 x 480 pixel touchscreen display, a 3.2 megapixel fixed-focus camera, 3G and 3.5G support, WiFi, GPS (plus a digital compass), microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity. The main functions are controlled with a trackball (a little like modern BlackBerry devices), plus there’s a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Annoyingly, the T-Mobile G1 has one of HTC’s combined USB/audio sockets which means that you cannot use a standard headset without an adaptor. It’s quite a heavy device at 158 grams. The processor is a 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A with 192 MB of RAM which is very similar to HTC’s Windows devices. Underneath, this is a quad-band GSM phone with UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA for high-speed downloads and uploads. The European version has 2100 MHz UMTS/WCDMA, the US version is 700 and 2100 MHz. The G1 also supports GPRS and EDGE data, plus 802.11 b and g WiFi. Maximum talktime on 3G is just under 6 hours with up to 16 days standby time, in part due to the large 1150 mAh battery.

T-Mobile G1: Software

Officially this handset is called the “T-Mobile G1 by HTC“, but unofficially it may well end up being called the gPhone or GooglePhone simply because of the way that Google have integrated their applications into the device.

As you would expect, the T-Mobile G1 has one-touch access to Google Search. The T-Mobile G1 has built-in support for Gmail (Google Mail), YouTube (owned by Google), Google Talk (instant messaging) and Google Maps and Google Street View. The mapping support looks particularly clever because it can use the compass to orientate the map depending on where the user is standing. Oddly, this also works with Street View, so you can use the G1 to get a picture of the street you’re standing in.. which you could just look at presumably? It’s not all Google though, the G1 also supports Amazon’s new MP3 download store and in the US will have support for AOL and Windows Live instant messaging. There should be a whole load of other applications available from the Android Market.. which sounds like something out of Star Wars, but it is simply a collection of applications and mashups for Android users to play with.

The Android interface is designed to be used with a finger, and is meant to be a simple and fun way of interacting with the device. It looks a little like Windows Vista, and it’s certainly different from the look on the iPhone and HTC’s TouchFLO smartphones. Quite how polished it will be is a question, as there are indications that the T-Mobile G1 has been a little rushed to market. Still, it should be possible to download updates and enhancements as needed. A couple of demonstration videos have been provided by T-Mobile that you can see at the bottom of the story.

It’s worth pointing out that the media player supports AAC, AAC+, AMR-NB, MIDI, MP3, WMA and WMV audio formats, although what video formats the G1 supports is unclear. As we mentioned before, YouTube is supported. There’s also a web browser, standard email client and a bunch of other applications built into the phone.

T-Mobile G1: Pros and Cons

When it comes to looks, the G1 lacks the “wow factor” of other handsets, although it looks quite smart and minimalistic. Although the 320 x 480 pixel display is better than most of the competition, we really feel that proper web browsing requires more pixels. There’s no mention of geotagging for the camera, nor what sort of video capture resolution it might have. It’s a heavy device to carry around, although it’s certainly lighter than the massive Nokia E90. And we really don’t know how buggy this new operating system is going to be.

On the other hand, it’s a refreshingly different approach from the rest of the field, and this is a very high-spec device which should suit most power users. And if you use Google’s services a lot, then this “GooglePhone” looks ideal.

T-Mobile G1: Availability

We understand that the T-Mobile G1 will be available in the US from October 22nd for $179 when taken out with a two-year contract. The UK will follow in November, with other T-Mobile regions following during early 2009.

Conclusion

If the T-Mobile G1 can keep the bugs to a minimum, then this could well be a really desirable handset. It stops short of being a great handset because it’s outclassed by the HTC Touch HD and other recent releases in hardware terms. T-Mobile’s pricing looks good too.

However, there’s a rumour going around that the next Nokia “Internet Tablet” might also be a phone.. and that will pitch Nokia directly against Android in the smartphone market. And then there’s whatever Microsoft has up its sleeve with Windows Mobile 7. Whatever you feel about Android and the T-Mobile G1, it’s worth remembering that this sort of competition is very, very good for consumers.

The HTC Touch Viva is a slight upgrade to the original HTC [...]

The HTC Touch Viva is a slight upgrade to the original HTC Touch, the main improvements being a software update, more memory and better battery life. This is a GSM-only handset with no 3G support, although it does come with WiFi connectivity. When the original Touch came out, the lack of 3G was annoying, but the Touch range now also has the HTC Touch 3G if you need UMTS support. The screen on the Touch Viva is a 2.8″ 240 x 320 pixel touch-sensitive panel. On the back is a fairly basic two megapixel camera, and the Touch Viva supports Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 and microSD expandable memory. Internal memory is now 128MB (up from 64MB in the original), and the operating system is Windows Mobile 6.1 with HTC’s enhanced TouchFLO interface running on top.

Inside is a 210 MHz TI OMAP 820 processor, the same as the original Touch. This isn’t particularly fast, but it should get most things done.

HTC say that the 1100 mAh battery can now give the Touch Viva up to 8 hours talktime and 11 days standby time. If this is the case, then that is a significant improvement over the original Touch. Overall, the Touch Viva is a little larger than its predecessor at 105 x 49 x 16mm, but slightly lighter at 110 grams.

HTC say that the Touch Viva should be available from early October 2008, but did not give any guidance on price, although our best guess is that it will have a street price of around £250 or €350 SIM-free.

The phone’s covered with hard plastics all around and a two-tone colour scheme. The screen looks scratch-proof with a hard plastic glass. The screen is rather small, standing at 1.5 inches with 65K colours and 168×168 pixels. The screen is bright and does well under direct sunlight. The soft plasticky keypad is a little unintuitive, not to the point of frustration but it just isn’t fun or easy typing into the keypad. The keypad has Thai characters and would be useful for those of us who know the language. The D-pad is a nice touch, but feels awfully stiff. Do be prepared to flex your finger to work the keypad here. The charger port is located at the bottom of the phone, the port’s is a micro-USB port. Beside it is the 3.5 headphone port. Opening the rear of the phone was a slight challenge, the plastic is latched hard and like tight drawers will need a few tugs before it slides open. Crack open the rear of the phone and you’ll see the 680 mAh battery. Remove the battery and you’ll see the SIM slot.

Features
The proprietary software on the phone is functional, with access to your phonebook, and messaging service, profiles and other services. The default phone profiles here are hampered by the lack of vibration in the phone.

The phone also sports a Body Mass Index counter- which strangeness we already gotten used to, countdown, and a stopwatch. The D-pad has shortcuts to various programs from calendars to messaging.

PIM wise, the 101 has a calendar, to do list, world clock, calculator, unit converter and a currency converter. For the text enthusiast, the lack of T9 truly will be a grind. However those adept in Thai will be able to take advantage of the Thai characters here. The FM radio will be your gateway to music here, and presets are available.

The phone has a good amount of battery time, with standby time lasting up to four days.

Connectivity
The phone has dual-band connectivity (GSM 900/1800). That pretty much sums up this entry-level handset.

Games
The 101 has two games loaded, Elf and Snake. Elf which is a Pac-Man redux with a different name, its still wildly entertaining controlling a yellow orb, it does leave us wondering how the original Pac-Man would feel about it. Snake is much like the earlier iterations of Nokia’s snake, controlling a pixel rectangle eating pixels-in colour.
