For some reason, the W63CA cellphone hit the FCC over on this side of the Pacific in August, but now it’s officially hit the stores in Japan. It’s got a couple of claimed world’s firsts, apparently: the world’s first 8.1 megapixel cameraphone, and the first with a 3.1-inch 480 × 800 pixels organic EL display. And it’s really trying hard to earn the cameraphone name, since it’s got a new Exilim image engine, 6-axis vibration compensation, a 28mm-equivalent lens and face recognition, and can also shoot 30fps VGA video. There’s Bluetooth, microSD memory, and a Japanese-English translator in the phone part. But unless Casio chooses to replace the CDMA guts of this machine with a more US-friendly version, it’s likely to remain in Japan.

Samsung has been battling Motorola over the years for the number 2 spot on mobile phones sales and 2007 will be known as the year of victory for the Asian company. While the first place in handsets sales has been for long entitled to Nokia with no chance of being replaced, there has always been a fight for the second place. Samsung’s invasion of low-cost and moderately priced mobiles decisively overtook Motorola’s sales, thus making it the number 2 mobile manufacturer in the world. Even in North America - where Motorola still has the upper hand - Samsung started to compete with it by offering a whole range of CDMA handsets, exactly the field where Motorola almost doesn’t exist. Samsung SGH-E200 is a moderately-priced handset that surely contributed to the above achievement.
The Motorola FONE F3 (also known as the MOTOFONE) is a very slim bar format phone that’s due to hit the market by the end of the year. There are two versions - the FONE F3 is a GSM handset, the F3c is a CDMA version for North America and other CDMA markets. We understand that the FONE is 9mm thick which makes it one of the slimmest handsets on the market, but the main point of interest with the MOTOFONE is the display.
