HTC MAX 4G

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: HTC

The HTC MAX 4G is an impressively specified Windows smartphone, but perhaps the most interesting part is the “4G” tag. If plain old UMTS / WCDMA is 3G, and HSDPA is 3.5G.. then what exactly is 4G? Well, that’s a good question because strictly speaking there are no recognised 4G standards. In this case, HTC are referring to the phone’s WiMAX capabilities. We have covered WiMAX before with the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition, and essentially it works a little like a cross between a cellular phone network and wi-fi (you can read more about it here).
If you were going to guess which European country the HTC MAX 4G might be launched in, then which one would you choose? Germany? Sweden? Britain? Nope, the answer is Russia.. a country that is developing into a very interesting market for mobile phones with a number of handsets made exclusively for that market.Currently, Moscow and St Petersburg have a WiMAX network running under the “Yota” brand name which allows for very high-speed network access wherever there is WiMAX coverage. Unlike the N810 though, the HTC MAX 4G is also a fully featured mobile phone with tri-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE data support (but no 3G) and also standard 802.11 b and g wi-fi. The WiMAX radio works in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz band, but not all WiMAX implementations worldwide use this frequency. Read the rest of this entry »

Samsung Tobi

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: Samsung

The Samsung Tobi is a fun phone aimed at “pre-teens and young adults”, according to Samsung. It is a quite basic but attractive device that weighs only 85 grams, but it comes in a variety of different colours, and each phone has three different themes and a customisable back cover. Before we look at the Samsung Tobi in more detail, we have to raise this question: is marketing a mobile phone at children actually a good idea? A recent report published by The Daily Telegraph raises questions about the increasing amount of electromagnetic radiation that children are exposed to, and explains that they could be more at risk than adults. Professor Lennart Hardell says that he believes that children under 12 should be banned from using mobile phones altogether.. and yet, the Samsung Tobi is specifically aimed at that market. The UK’s Department of Health has a leaflet called Mobile Phones and Health [PDF - Adobe Acrobat Reader required] that gives guidance on mobile phone use for children.Samsung are marketing the Tobi as a safety aid though - it has an “SOS call” and “SOS message” function plus a “Fake Call” trick that Samsung haven’t fully explained. Samsung have made some effort in the materials used to remove toxic materials and potential allergens. Read the rest of this entry »

LG KC560

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: LG

This is a fairly standard GSM-only multimedia phone, with a QVGA display, 3 megapixel camera
, FM radio, microSD expandable memory, a multimedia player that supports MP3, MPEG4, Windows Media and AAC variants, plus Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 2.0 connectivity. At a LG KC560 recommended price of around 9000 rubles (approximately €260) the KC560 is more expensive than the better specified KC550. Presumably all that yellow metal styling makes it cost more.

One innovative feature is the control wheel on the right hand side that changes the KC560 between difference profiles depending on your environment. For example, the “club” profile makes the KC560 louder, have more impressive backlighting and stronger vibration. Anyone who has struggled with 6 layers of menu options on some rival phones might appreciate the simplicity.
Markets around the world differ, so you can’t blame LG for coming up with a handset that will be popular in some markets and considered tasteless in others. Russia is a market where the KC560 might do well, and it should be available there during November 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

Samsung is getting ready to launch two new low-end devices: Samsung E1110 and Samsung E2510, both obviously targeted to customer who don’t want to pay too much for a mobile phone.

The first new handset, Samsung E2510, is a clamshell that doesn’t look bad, although it has a simple design. The E2510 does not feature an external display, coming with an internal one only, of 128 x 160 pixels and 65K colors.

Furthermore, Samsung E2510 has no 3G connectivity and not even EDGE, so data transfers will be quite slow.
Here are the main specs of the new clamshell: Read the rest of this entry »

Nokia N79 review

Posted by: cellphones

Posted in: Nokia

The last great S60 Nokia’s have been available for quite some time now, and one of them is the Nokia N79. By “last great S60 Nokia’s,” of course, I mean those handsets which have been announced and released before the much-awaited S60 5th Edition OS release on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

In typical S60 fashion, a lot of the core functionality from older models remain, while new and improved features are seamlessly integrated on top. The Nokia N79 runs on Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, and as expected there are a lot of things that remind one of older models with the same operating system.
Nokia N79 key features and design

But first things first: what are the Nokia N79’s key features? Well, it’s got a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, 2.4-inch screen, built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, and accelerometer. But it holds much, much more under the hood, and so, I guess it would be better to elaborate, bullet-point style: Read the rest of this entry »

Sony Ericsson W705

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: Sony Ericsson

The Sony Ericsson W705 is a 3.5G capable slider phone with WiFi and GPS. It is essentially a “Walkman” version of the upcoming G705. There is very little point in repeating the specifications of the G705 because the W705 is almost identical in every way, except this has the “Walkman” media player and a 4GB memory card as standard in the box.. and it appears that the W705 has had the GPS functionality removed. So, if you’re interested in hard technical specs just read the write-up of the G705, and bear these small details in mind.

Although we’re sure that the W705 will be a good music phone, we have to question why it exists at all, when the G705 is almost identical, and Sony Ericsson themselves have indicated that their range is too big and muddled.

By our reckoning this is the 28th Walkman phone since 2005, and we feel that this particular sub-brand has been stretched too much. With profits slipping and a baffling range of handsets, it is time for Sony Ericsson to sharpen up its act.
Make “Walkman” the standard. Read the rest of this entry »
