The HTC MAX 4G is an impressively specified Windows smartphone, but perhaps the most interesting part is the “4G” tag. If plain old UMTS / WCDMA is 3G, and HSDPA is 3.5G.. then what exactly is 4G? Well, that’s a good question because strictly speaking there are no recognised 4G standards. In this case, HTC are referring to the phone’s WiMAX capabilities. We have covered WiMAX before with the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition, and essentially it works a little like a cross between a cellular phone network and wi-fi (you can read more about it here).
If you were going to guess which European country the HTC MAX 4G might be launched in, then which one would you choose? Germany? Sweden? Britain? Nope, the answer is Russia.. a country that is developing into a very interesting market for mobile phones with a number of handsets made exclusively for that market.Currently, Moscow and St Petersburg have a WiMAX network running under the “Yota” brand name which allows for very high-speed network access wherever there is WiMAX coverage. Unlike the N810 though, the HTC MAX 4G is also a fully featured mobile phone with tri-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE data support (but no 3G) and also standard 802.11 b and g wi-fi. The WiMAX radio works in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz band, but not all WiMAX implementations worldwide use this frequency. Read the rest of this entry »
The Samsung Tobi is a fun phone aimed at “pre-teens and young adults”, according to Samsung. It is a quite basic but attractive device that weighs only 85 grams, but it comes in a variety of different colours, and each phone has three different themes and a customisable back cover. Before we look at the Samsung Tobi in more detail, we have to raise this question: is marketing a mobile phone at children actually a good idea? A recent report published by The Daily Telegraph raises questions about the increasing amount of electromagnetic radiation that children are exposed to, and explains that they could be more at risk than adults. Professor Lennart Hardell says that he believes that children under 12 should be banned from using mobile phones altogether.. and yet, the Samsung Tobi is specifically aimed at that market. The UK’s Department of Health has a leaflet called Mobile Phones and Health [PDF - Adobe Acrobat Reader required] that gives guidance on mobile phone use for children.Samsung are marketing the Tobi as a safety aid though - it has an “SOS call” and “SOS message” function plus a “Fake Call” trick that Samsung haven’t fully explained. Samsung have made some effort in the materials used to remove toxic materials and potential allergens.
This is a fairly standard GSM-only multimedia phone, with a QVGA display, 3 megapixel camera

The last great S60 Nokia’s have been available for quite some time now, and one of them is the Nokia N79. By “last great S60 Nokia’s,” of course, I mean those handsets which have been announced and released before the much-awaited S60 5th Edition OS release on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.
The Gravity integrates a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard with support for instant messaging, text, multimedia and video messaging. The built-in 1.3-megapixel camera captures stills and video, while a microSD card slot provides extra storage space for multimedia. For wireless connectivity, Bluetooth supports headsets, carkits and stereo headphones. The Gravity is a user-friendly messaging device that allows customers constant and easy connections with their social circles throughout their preoccupied day.
The Samsung Behold (T919) packs a large touch-screen display with a full-QWERTY on-screen keypad with vibrating feedback. The integrated accelerometer automatically switches the LCD between portrait and landscape modes. Running Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, the Behold is specially designed to let users personalize commonly used applications. They can choose from preinstalled applications such as the web, music player, instant messaging, Bluetooth and navigation services to add to the home screen. It also has a 5.0-megapixel camera with auto-focus, flash and video recording capabilities. The GPS receiver uses TeleNav GPS Navigator for turn-by-turn driving directions with maps. It supports Wi-Fi connectivity for hotspot Internet access, making it an ideal all-in-one global device.
The Sony Ericsson W705 is a 3.5G capable slider phone with WiFi and GPS. It is essentially a “Walkman” version of the upcoming G705. There is very little point in repeating the specifications of the G705 because the W705 is almost identical in every way, except this has the “Walkman” media player and a 4GB memory card as standard in the box.. and it appears that the W705 has had the GPS functionality removed. So, if you’re interested in hard technical specs just read the write-up of the G705, and bear these small details in mind.
