Nokia, the “king of emerging markets”, has just announced the upcoming release of no less than 7 (seven) new cheap phones.

Most of these handsets come with Mail on Ovi and Nokia Life Tools, two new services especially created for mobile users in emerging markets.

Mail on Ovi lets you create an email account directly on a cell phone, hence there’s no need for you to own a personal computer to start emailing. By the end of 2008, the service will be available for all of Nokia’s Series 40 phones.

Nokia Life Tools, a suit of agriculture information and education services, is created for rural and small town communities. The services leverage on an icon-based user interface and on SMS, providing “timely and relevant information” to farmers and students. Nokia Life Tools will first be launched in India, starting 2009, with other Asian and African markets to follow later. Read the rest of this entry »

Nokia recently launched the BH-804, a rather fetching, minimal Bluetooth headset that comes with a neckstrap and charging pod, and due to drop before the end of the year. Pretty simple-looking deal with just two buttons, but if it’s not your cup of tea, why not enter Nokia’s Almighty Headset Competition and get Nokia to actually make the craziest Bluetooth headphones you can cook up. Just chose from one of the existing stereo headset models and get cracking. Oh man, it’ll be hard getting any work done today with something like this to play with…

Nokia E63, previously rumored to be called Nokia E72, has recently appeared in a set of live shots, the first ones with the smartphone. These not only that confirm the existence of the device, but they also show the world that E63 has a lot in common with Nokia E71, launched by the Finns a few months ago.

By the way it looks, Nokia E63 seems to be a poorer version of E71. That’s because it’s almost completely made out of plastic (gone is that metallic case of E71) and its features are a bit incomplete.

According to a list of specs found at the Telefon-Treff forum (automatic translation from German), the new Eseries lacks GPS and a front-facing camera.
The handset’s other features, however, are similar to those the E71 offers, including: Read the rest of this entry »

If you’re a US mobile user who just happen to like simple flip phones, Cricket has just launched something for you: Nokia 1606, an entry-level clamshell that works on the said carrier’s AWS network.

Of course, Cricket only offers its mobile services in limited areas of the US, but it still has ~3.3 mil customers who need phones too, right?

So, after the more evolved Samsung JetSet, Leap Wireless’ subsidiary has now come up with the Nokia 1606. The new phone is not one to be excited about, but it might prove to be a good choice if you don’t need too many features. No memory expansion slot, no camera, no MP3 player. But hey, some of us might not need those.

Nokia 1606 can be found in all of Cricket’s stores, retailing at 129.99. If bought online, from Cricket’s website, the flip phone will cost you only $109.99.

Nokia 6170

The Nokia 7200 model was a really untraditional phone with textile covers. It’s a standard Series 40 mobile and is on the market for several months. Nokia claims that it’s a successful one and I, personally, know that women (which are the main target group) like the phone. This review concerns another clamshell in the list, the 6170 model, which was introduced in June. Nokia used larger display, new graphical environment and also a lot of new options and functions. The phone is stylish but also quite conservative; main design feature are the steel covers. Estimated price is lower than the price of Nokia 7200. The third flip phone from the same family is the September newcomer Nokia 7270. It derives from the same concept as the 6170, but adds a bit more of extravagance and some new functions - for example a radio. The tested Nokia 6170 will be in distribution approximately in November. Nokia announced that the price would be about 250 EUR. Because there is still some time remaining to the distribution start, it is clear that we don’t have a final product available yet. But it works perfect, except a few details, so we don’t hesitate to publish this article. Read the rest of this entry »

Nokia 3120

Nokia 3120 classic is just another one of them mixed by the time-tested recipe - do the bare minimum but do it right. Now, the notion of bare necessities in mobile phones is stretching as we speak, so no wonder yet another 3G-enabled junior gets thrown in the midrange skirmish. The retail package of Nokia 3120 classic is downright modest. In fact, the handset comes in one of the smallest boxes we’ve seen and we weren’t really surprised to find only a couple of goodies hiding inside.

All in all, a DC charger and a handsfree set complete the list of accessories you get with this classic shaped device. Not that we have expected miracles in this price range but a medium-sized memory card still would’ve been nice. Not to mention that the handsfree remote and headphones are not separable unlike most higher-end models. Read the rest of this entry »

Nokia 1680 Classic

Posted by: rubbi

Posted in: Uncategorized

At just €50 (around £35 or $70), the Nokia 1680 Classic [pictured left] is one of the cheapest handsets in Nokia’s range. It’s an elegant looking monoblock phone with a VGA resolution camera, 128 x 160 pixel display, web browser and email client plus instant messaging support.

Weighing only 74 grams, the Nokia 1680 Classic boasts an impressive talktime of up to 7.6 hours with over 17 days maximum standby time.

Admittedly, it’s a pretty basic phone.. but getting a camera phone for this sort of price is impressive, and the Nokia 1680 Classic looks like a much more expensive phone too.

Nokia say that the 1680 Classic should be available during Q2 2008 in Black, Slate Gray, Wine Red and Deep Plum colours.
